Emily Logan is an adult orphan, loves food like no tomorrow and is always cautious of her heart even though she believes in happy endings. Just over eighteen months ago is when Emily finished undergrad but also got dumped by the love of her life Max, who she was with for four years of undergrad. Even now as it's been over a year and a half she still struggles when she hears about Max, but even though she has been with just the one guy she still feels that at some point in her life she will find love again but she just is guarding her heart more than anything at the risk of being hurt again. The last thing that she was expecting was to meet Dr Jake Reid, he is the exact opposite of Max and all he wants to do is show her that she can have her happy ever after. He also knew that from the first moment he set eyes on Emily that she was the one and knew that he loves her.
Emily has known Jake for around two months now and even though they love being in each others company they still haven't determined their relationship. Emily arrives home after spending the day getting pampered for the Christmas party that her best friend Sarah and her boyfriend Charlie have organised this year, and even though she is dreading it she is glad that Jake is going with her.
Emily has explained in the few months of being together that after spending four years in a relationship with Max it is still hard hearing his name and anything to do with him but Jake promises that no matter what he will be there to support her.
They both head to the party and when they get there everything seems to be going smoothly that it until Emily comes face to face with Max and his new girlfriend Jennifer. Jake can tell that Emily is uncomfortable with this and comes to her rescue and whilst Jake stands in front of Max, Emily can't tell who is more uncomfortable Max because he's meeting Jake or Jake because of what he done to Emily. Jake takes Emily out of the way so that she can process her feelings and surroundings and when she reveals that it's hard because in a way where Jennifer is it should be her but she reassures him that she's over him, but it's just hard. During a dance Jake's pager goes off and even though they both aren't happy about it she knows that he might have to leave so while he goes to phone the hospital Peter instantly dances with her only to lure her into Max's arms and even though they both protest Peter quickly dances away with Jennifer. Emily really is not happy about it and refuses to say anything to him at first but then Max knows how she works by now and manages to get her to let down her guard as when Jake comes back he finds her with her head on his shoulder. Even though she tries to tell Jake that nothing happened Jake reassures her that it's alright but Emily can't seem to shake off the guilty feeling she has.
Jake ends up telling her that he has to go back to the hospital and the last thing that she was expecting was to be eating a meal late at night with her ex boyfriend, but strangely enough it turns out to be quite pleasant after a bit. Emily now feels that she has closure and can move on with her relationship with Jake. The next morning as Jake promised he has the whole weekend off and comes to pick her up at her house but he wasn't expecting to see Max and Peter at her house but when she explains what happened he finally calms down a little.
Everything seems to be going well but when Jake learns that Emily never slept with Max he is shocked but a bit upset when he learns she refuses to sleep with him until she gets married as she wants to honour her mom's last wish. On Christmas day as Jake is driving Emily back to her house before she heads over to his family's later on he proposes to her and even though she says no she knows for a fact that it will be temporarily but she doesn't tell him that.
After a trip over New Years Jake is left heartbroken as when he heads to where her and her friends have gone after she didn't message him all day as he was worried about to learn the next day Max got down on one knee and proposed to his Emily, it literally breaks his heart. When he learns that Emily didn't even say no he can't believe his ears as he thinks that she loves him so he walks away heading home thinking that she is going back with her friends. Instead of Emily going back with her friends she stays behind waiting for him thinking that he will come back to her but when she ends up spending the whole day there she is left heartbroken even more as the guy the previously said on Christmas that he will never leave her and that he loves her has ended up going back on his words.
Emily is attempting to cope with the fact that Jake has given up on their relationship even though she has been trying to get in contact with him but when a job offer that she applied to last year comes up she decides that in order to mend her broken heart she needs to take this job in Japan. Will Jake realise what he's lost before Emily leaves for Japan or will he live to regret it. Also will Emily be able to mend her broken heart or will moving away just make her love Jake even more.
You won't want to miss this book as it's full of so many turns and twists.
You will be glad to know that the next book in this series is from Jake's perspective so if you fell in love with this book then you should definitely check Jake's story out. I fell in love with it from the very first page and I hope you do as well.
